Psoriasis occurs when there is an excessive and rapid growth of epidermal layer of the skin (top most layer of the skin). Normally skin cells are replaced by shedding with new cells for every 28 to 30 days, but in Psoriasis it may occur for every 3-4 days, due to premature proliferation of keratinocytes which are produced from dermis ( 2nd layer of Skin) leading to formation of silvery and scaly patches with exfoliation of skin.

What are the Types of Psoriasis?

Psoriasis is of 5 types

1. Plaque psoriasis :

This is the most common type of psoriasis which appears as raised red areas covered by white or silvery skin. These are called plaques which are commonly found on elbow, knees, scalp and back.

2. Guttate psoriasis :

Small numerous drop shaped red or pink scaly lesion which appears over large areas of the body especially trunk, limbs and scalp.

3. Inverse Psoriasis :

Appears as smooth inflamed or reddened patches of the skin frequently affects skin folds particularly arm pits, under the breast, genitals, between buttocks.

4. Pustular Psoriasis :

These are blisters filled with non infectious pus surrounded by red areas which is usually tender. This can be seen on hands and feet or all over the body.

5. Erythrodermic Psoriasis :

Widespread inflammation and scaling of skin associated with severe itching, swelling and pain.

The cause for psoriasis is still not clear. Although there is a family history of the condition. Certain factors which trigger the onset of psoriasis includes chronic infections, stress, climacteric and seasonal changes, alcohol consumption, smoking , obesity, over exposure to sun, certain therapies (pain killers, anti-hypertensives) and people with advanced HIV often exhibit Psoriasis.

And Psoriatic arthritis is also a common complication in severe Psoriasis. Psoriatic Arthritis is a chronic inflammatory arthritis where joint becomes swollen, tender and painful. This can occur in any joint, but mostly can affects finger and toe joints. Psoriatic arthritis is generally associated with skin and nail Psoriasis. Psoriasis can affect nails and produce pin head sized depression with discoloration under the nails. In more severe cases nails become thick and separate from the underlying nail bed.
